Join us for a free webinar on February 4 at noon to learn how a regional wastewater authority is leading one of the most innovative and forward-thinking water initiatives in the nation – taking wastewater and turning it into clean water.

This cutting-edge initiative is being advanced by HRSD (the Hampton Roads Sanitation District) through its Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT) program.

HRSD’s proactive approach is creating a sustainable source of groundwater for eastern Virginia.

The SWIFT program takes highly treated water that would otherwise be discharged into the James River and provides additional advanced water treatment to meet drinking water quality standards.

SWIFT Research Center is in Suffolk.

The resulting SWIFT Water is then conveyed through managed aquifer recharge wells into the Potomac aquifer – the primary source of groundwater for eastern Virginia. By replenishing groundwater faster than it can be naturally replaced, SWIFT provides a sustainable, long-term solution that supports communities throughout the Hampton Roads region.

Since the inception of 2018, SWIFT has been operating the SWIFT Research Center in Suffolk, which is still used for research today and is available for tours. This nearly $3 billion program includes 38 active projects, including construction of two new advanced water treatment facilities in Newport News and Suffolk and completion of a world-record horizontal directional drill beneath a major shipping channel.

Lauren Zuravnsky, HRSD’s director of Design and Construction – SWIFT, will discuss how the innovative SWIFT program is helping secure the region’s future and provide a reliable water future for Hampton Roads.
